Language wars and Kilkenny cats

I try to stay out of the language wars as much as possible, and I’ve particularly sat this round out because it was started by a company who’s trying to sell something. However, the word that A Word A Day sent out today seemed strangely appropriate. The word was “Kilkenny cats” and you can read more about them here. I particularly liked the limerick:

There wanst was two cats of Kilkenny
Each thought there was one cat too many
So they fought and they fit
And they scratched and they bit
‘Til instead of two cats there weren’t any.

    Nice.

    Language wars are the domain of the insecure and/or immature. Once a person has a certain number of years in the business, he realizes that there are numerous languages because there are numerous considerations that go into building an applications, and different languages will favor different considerations.

    It’s funny. Do you suppose the language zealots go into Baskin-Robbins or ColdStone and argue with the counter staff that Chocolate is the One True Flavor and therefore they should stop selling Strawberry, Razzleberry, Nurpleberry or Zipple-flavored ice cream?
